Miracles do happen. Tonight we celebrated the 1 year of sobriety for one of the guys I sponsor. 1 year ago when I moved to California I would have never have thought that David would have made it one month of sobriety once he left treatment, boy am I glad I was wrong.
A quiet unassuming kid (he’s only 20) I assumed that he wasn’t serious about getting sober. That all changed once we started working the steps and talking about how to improve his relationship with God. Homeless at 18, massive amounts of drugs, a fractured relationship with his family….he was hopeless.
Is he a program kind of guy who goes to a meeting every day? No, he’s not. What I do know is that he wants to live life without drugs and alcohol. His prayer life is improving and he has a set of Bible verses next to his bed that he reads daily.
I have learned that I need to look past appearances and not pre-judge others. If David who NO ONE thought would be able to stay sober can do it, this should serve as a reminder that if God is first, amazing things happen.
If you are reading this and are debating or are afraid of trying to get clean, learn from David. He was willing to listen to instruction, wanted to make a change and most importantly he has strived to be more Christ like everyday.
