It doesn’t matter how much sobriety time someone has. The ability and willingness to ask for help is essential. I still call my sponsor everyday, most times its just to call and check in which shows discipline. However if there is something that I need advice on I don’t hesitate to ask. When it comes to spiritual guidance I reach out to my pastors, Crossfit information I call trainers that I know, martial arts is an email or text to my masters….in all areas I seek out suggestions on how to be effective. I don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Ask For Help…No One Can Do This Alone.
So we’re coming up on the end of the Top 10 Actions In Sobriety. If there was one that I had was in practice the most this year, it would be this one. For the 1st time since I got sober, I had more injuries, illness and times away from the gym than any time before. Between my low back injury (no training for 3 months) to the bacterial infection (no training for almost 2 months)….ive spent more time not working on the physical than I would have liked.
Earlier this year my Crossfit scores were ridiculous, body looked the best ever, basically all my goals were achieved. Then all this crap started coming my way. Ive been hassled that my recovery was only based on working out. Well, if that was the case I wouldn’t be still be sober. Im the chubbiest ive been since early stages of recovery and my Crossfit is the crappiest ever. Heres the thing…my sobriety is the strongest its ever been. While I wrote the article below months ago, its still hold true today.
If You Say You’re Gonna Do Something, DO IT.
I remember visiting Souza Gym (my Crossfit family) and saying “Eh, im tired. Think im just gonna hang out and watch today.” Before I could sit down and get comfortable Kaala pretty much did what his family calls the KGT, Kaala Guilt Trip. Basically if you say you’re gonna do something…you better do it. Well at least that was the gist of things. This was about 2 years into my sobriety but it reaffirmed something that I had long held as one of my core ideas.
Have Solid Mentors
As I continue on the Ten Action Steps that have really helped in recovery…mentors are probably one of those that am so grateful to have. With the next step in my journey consisting of opening a sobriety life coaching center, none of this would be possible if it wasnt for amazing men in my life who invested time and effort into me. I share about mentors because on my own, im doomed. When I reach out and ask for help, amazing results have happened. Im posting a previous entry since it probably best describes my view on mentorship and its an opportunity to once again thank all of those have poured their knowledge and time in to me.
Consistency In All Things Is Essential.
I used to be a flake. The only times that I would be consistent…women, money and drugs. Oh and taking my family members to the hospital. Aside from that, in all things I was a Grade A flake. Wouldn’t show up, cancel at the last minute and if you were lucky…id let you know. The ability to follow through and complete things were absent.
Can’t vs. Won’t
Can’t vs. Won’t? I was taught the difference from one of my mentors while doing a Crossfit workout. It was toward the end of a brutal workout out I said “I cant finish.” His reply was “Cant or wont? If you cant physically complete it than stop. If its cause you wont suck it up and do work!” By identifying between the two it has allowed me to move past physical/mental/spiritual obstacles. Many times ive found that I can get through things its whether or not Im willing to do the work needed to accomplish it.
Acceptance of Gods Will = Peace
I know what chaos is like….I lived it for over a decade. Never want to go back to that lifestyle. Since chaos, disorder, confusion, upheaval, havoc, etc was so prevalent in the past, I know what peace is. I embrace it with so much gratitude that it truly is for me, one of the greatest gifts sobriety has brought.
3 Things.
